A facilitated space for discussing climate-related emotions

RSVP: EastBayTherapistCommunity@gmail.com

One of the biggest challenges of the climate crisis is knowing what to do with the complex set of emotions regarding the planetary emergency. Where is it safe to talk about the fear, outrage, and grief? The idea is that the more comfortable we become with these difficult feelings, the more able we are to cope with our situation. Climate Cafes offer a structured space for informal, open, respectful discussion of emotional responses and reactions related to the climate. We will also invite curiosity about what comes up in our bodies as we engage in this discussion.

Although actions can be talked about, a climate cafe is a quiet, reflective experience - a haven from our usual busyness and activity. It is not designed to lead participants to any conclusion or toward action. This is not a space to focus on political debates or scientific arguments. It is an opportunity to share and reflect on emotions about the climate crisis that may be uncomfortable to express in many social situations.

This is a facilitated group but is not group therapy. The facilitator will also be participating as a peer. Please be a mental health clinician or practitioner of other healing arts to register for this offering.

Gwynne Gilson, LMFT is an East Bay resident, offering therapy virtually to adult clients anywhere in California. Her work is inspired by Somatic Experiencing, Interpersonal Neurobiology, and Organic Intelligence. She is a trained Climate Cafe facilitator through the Climate Psychology Alliance of North America. She is on the board of the Somatic Experiencing Professional Association of Northern California.

In herself and others, Gwynne seeks to evoke and attend to what is emerging that is already organizing and supportive. Climate emotions, trauma, social justice and the question of how to be a citizen therapist are themes she’s exploring. You can learn more about Gwynne at her website: https://www.gwynnegilson.com.
